As a result of their use as a herbal treatment, onions have recently revealed various medical characteristics. Such qualities include anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antithrombotic, anti-cancer, antioxidant, and heart and liver protection. Even with all of these possible health benefits, onions may cause harmful side effects in certain people.
When you have these three circumstances, you should limit your intake of onions.
1. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a prevalent illness, affects 10-15% of the population in the United States. Some of the symptoms include gas, bloating, stomach cramping, gas, overall weakness, and irregular bowel movements ranging from constipation to diarrhea.
Some people may need to avoid onions permanently or temporarily because they can induce or aggravate IBS symptoms.
2. Acid indigestion.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when food and liquids in your stomach move back up into the tube that joins your throat and esophagus (GERD). You may experience a burning sensation in your chest as a result. One study from 2000 found that foods like onions can worsen heartburn.
Bloating can be excruciatingly uncomfortable when the stomach is overwhelmed with gas. Onion eating causes severe bloating daily. The fibers in onions create bloating.
